Success is something that we all strive for, but not all are willing to do what it takes. As a high school athlete, Payton Mills says that sometimes the best lessons to learn come when things do not go according to plan.

“It takes a lot of tears and failure to figure out what you need to fix,” she said. “When I have games that we lose or maybe I didn’t play my best I try to figure out where I can get better and focus on those things. Sometimes your best lessons come from the times you don’t win.”

Payton is a junior at Weatherford High School, where she is a member of the basketball, softball, and track teams. 

Throughout her career, Mills has made a lot of memories with her teammates. Out of all of them, she has one that stands out as her favorite. 

“I think the highlight of my career would be winning state softball for the first time in school history,” she said. “I caught the last out of the championship game on a foul ball that I really had to hustle and make that play. This last fast pitch season, we all worked hard and came together as a team. Our team motto was Eyes Up!, making sure we always glorify God while we play.”

When she is on the field or court competing, Payton is proud to wear the Weatherford uniform, and she knows that she is playing for more than just herself. 

“Getting to represent my school is a big thing because you get to have little kids look up to you, and it gives you a feeling of purpose,” she said. “I also take pride in being an Eagle and representing our community and school wherever we go. Even though I’m in high school, I still want to inspire young ladies to follow their passions, whatever they might be. I also want to be seen in the community as a student athlete who is kind and respectful of all people. I feel very blessed with the opportunities I have been able to have and never take them for granted.”

Along with playing for the Eagles, Mills also plays basketball for SWARM National. She enjoys being able to play for them and the opportunities is has allowed her to experience.

“I travel the United States during the spring and summer, competing against some of the best players in the nation,” she stated. “This has allowed me the opportunity to not only get better but also see areas of the country I might not otherwise get to see. We have had the opportunity to play in Texas Stadium and also Globe Life Field in front of college coaches from across the country.”
