Before the first pitch is thrown or the opening tip goes up, Whitlee Jones has already set her focus. The Weatherford High School sophomore enters competition with faith, determination and a desire to improve every day, qualities that guide her as a multi-sport athlete for the Eagles.
Jones competes in softball and basketball, taking on several important roles for Weatherford’s softball program. She plays first base, second base and pitcher, positions that demand versatility and preparation. Whether she is fielding an infield ground ball, working from the circle or providing a dependable presence at first base, Jones approaches every chance to play as an opportunity to grow.
“My faith in the Lord and my drive to compete and get better every day” are what motivate her most, Jones said.
That mindset has helped Jones build a foundation around hard work and steady repetition. She said success has not come from simply showing up for scheduled practices. Instead, she uses as many opportunities as possible to sharpen her skills.
“Hard work and determination,” Jones said. “I practice every chance I get when I’m not playing.”
Jones also draws inspiration from people who have shown her how athletic competition can be connected to a larger purpose. Her father and Coach Abbie Moses have been especially influential, encouraging her to keep fighting through difficult moments and to glorify God through how she plays.
“My Dad and Coach Abbie Moses show me how to glorify God through playing and how to keep fighting even when it’s hard,” Jones said.
A memorable accomplishment in Jones’ career came outside the Weatherford uniform, when she helped win the USSSA All-States National Championship in Florida. The championship remains a highlight in her athletic journey and reflects the competitive drive she brings to the field.
As an Eagle, some matchups carry extra meaning. Jones said Clinton is the opponent she most enjoys beating because of the longtime rivalry between the two programs. Those games provide the type of atmosphere and competition that athletes remember, but Jones knows her responsibility extends beyond the final score.
“Their name is on my back, and I have to play for them and represent well,” Jones said of wearing Weatherford across her uniform.
Away from athletics, Jones is involved in Student Council, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and agricultural education activities. Managing that busy schedule requires determination, organization and focus, she said.
Jones also follows former Weatherford standout Marley Teasley on social media, admiring the success Teasley has achieved in softball. For Jones, Teasley’s journey is proof that a player from her hometown can pursue big goals.
With two high school seasons still ahead, Jones is continuing to build her game one practice, one competition and one determined effort at a time.
