In 1985 and 1989, the best cross country program in the state was at Weatherford High
School. Those banners are still around campus and everyone on the team has seen them.
Head coach Kaleb Fischer is building the program back to that championship level, but that does not happen overnight. Coming into the 2022 season, the roster is dotted with experienced runners and some fresh faces who bring a lot of promise to the program.
“We return most of our team from last year and are adding some good young freshman this year,” said coach Fischer.
One runner who knows what it is like to compete at a high level is Jacoby Welsh. Welsh competed at state last year with a top 20 finish.
“Jacoby was our highest finisher at the state meet last year, finishing 18th and just out of the All-State spots. We look for Jacoby to be in the top 15 this year and he is looking ready to do so,” said coach Fischer.
One of the young runners on the roster is Miguel Perez. Perez is showing he belongs at the varsity level and continues to impress coach Fischer.
“Miguel just started running this year but is already showing great things in practice. We are looking forward to seeing what he will do for us this year.”
Overall the program is on the rise and with more numbers, coach Fischer can begin to develop his younger talent returning the Eagles to the “best in the state,” conversation.
