Weatherford High School junior Ryker Smith is building his reputation as a dependable presence on the field and a committed teammate off it.

Smith, who plays linebacker, said the demands of his position require quick thinking and clear communication, especially when relaying formation calls. Despite the challenge, he embraces the responsibility as part of his growth as a player.

“Our team always brings the energy and works harder than anyone else,” Smith said.

That energy starts with leadership, particularly from head coach Higby. Smith credited his coach’s approach as a key motivator.

“Coach Higby always brings the energy and enthusiasm and always pushes us,” he said.

Beyond the field, Smith is an 11th-grade student who enjoys history, naming Mr. Misak as his favorite teacher. When he is not at practice or in the classroom, he spends much of his free time working out to improve his performance.

Smith said one of the most memorable moments he has witnessed came during the 2025 season when teammate Ty Short made a one-handed catch for a significant gain. Another unforgettable moment came during a game at Cache, when Preston King returned an interception for a touchdown but slipped and fell before celebrating.

For Smith, the experience of playing football goes beyond highlights. He values the team’s culture and sense of unity.

“It’s one big family where everyone treats you well and lifts you up in hard times,” he said.

That support system, combined with the lessons learned through competition, has shaped his outlook on life.

“It will help me overcome adversity and being tough and working hard through everything,” Smith said.

As game time approaches, Smith and his teammates rely on a shared routine to prepare mentally.

“I like listening to the pregame playlist with the team,” he said.

With a strong work ethic and a team-first mindset, Smith continues to develop into a key contributor for Weatherford High School.
