Weatherford High School senior Jakoby Flynn approaches football with a mindset shaped by discipline, leadership and a deep connection to his teammates.
Flynn, a varsity receiver for the Eagles, has developed into a reliable playmaker known not only for his athletic ability but also for his focus and commitment to improvement. As he enters his final season, he reflects on the influences and experiences that have shaped his high school career.
“Coach Soss inspires me because he is always encouraging me to be better, both on and off the field,” Flynn said. “He pushes me to work hard and reach my full potential.”
That emphasis on growth extends beyond football. In the classroom, Flynn said math is his favorite subject, and he credits Mr. Fischer as the most impactful teacher he has had during his education.
On the field, Flynn embraces the challenges that come with playing receiver, a position that demands constant awareness and readiness.
“The most difficult part of the position is making sure you’re always focused and ready to make a play when your number is called,” he said.
Flynn’s focus has helped him contribute to some unforgettable moments. Among them is a standout defensive play by a teammate that left a lasting impression.
“The craziest thing I’ve seen was Preston King’s interception against El Reno,” Flynn said. “It was a huge play and one I’ll never forget.”
While individual moments stand out, Flynn said the relationships within the team are what he values most. He described the Eagles as more than just a group of players.
“What I enjoy most is how close we are,” he said. “We’re more than teammates — we’re like family.”
That sense of unity is reinforced by a shared commitment to hard work, something Flynn sees every day in practice and games.
“I love the work ethic of my teammates,” he said. “Everyone is willing to put in the effort to help the team succeed.”
One of Flynn’s most meaningful memories came during a high-pressure postseason moment.
“My favorite memory is the final play of our playoff game against Blanchard,” he said. “It’s a moment that will always stick with me.”
Preparation is a key part of Flynn’s routine, and he has developed a unique way to get into the right mindset before kickoff.
“Before games, I like to listen to Michael Jackson,” he said. “It helps me relax, focus, and get mentally prepared to compete.”
Outside of games and practices, Flynn continues to dedicate time to improving his performance.
“Whenever I have free time, I like to put in extra work and improve my skills in sports,” he said.
Through athletics, Flynn has gained lessons that extend far beyond the field. As he prepares for life after high school, he believes those experiences will continue to guide him.
“Athletics has taught me how to be a leader, work hard, and stay committed to achieving my goals,” he said.
With his senior season underway, Flynn remains focused on making the most of his final year while continuing to grow as both a player and a person.
