Weatherford High School senior Austin Burkeen is preparing for his final football season with a mindset shaped by hard work, faith and family.

Burkeen, who plays on both the offensive and defensive lines, has become a key contributor for Weatherford. While the physical demands of his positions are significant, he said the toughest challenge comes on defense when facing multiple blockers.

“The hardest part is getting double teamed,” Burkeen said.

Despite the grind, Burkeen embraces the team-first culture that defines the program. He said the bond among teammates is what stands out most.

“The thing I love most is how we are a family and all have each other’s back and the brotherhood we all have,” he said.

That sense of unity has helped fuel recent success. One of Burkeen’s favorite memories came last season when the team secured a milestone victory.

“Winning a playoff game for the first time in six years last year,” he said.

Burkeen also recalled a lighter moment on the field — a teammate getting pantsed after recovering a fumble — as one of the craziest things he has witnessed during a game.

Off the field, Burkeen spends his time working out, attending church and working. His commitment to improvement stems in part from his biggest inspiration: his father.

“My dad, he always showed up when it mattered, supported me through everything and always pushed me to be better in all my sports,” Burkeen said. “He always helped me any way he could.”

Athletics have also shaped Burkeen’s approach to life.

“It has taught me how to work hard and show up even when you don’t feel like it,” he said.

Before each game, Burkeen sticks to a simple routine to stay focused.

“I always say a prayer and listen to music pregame,” he said.

As he enters his senior year, Burkeen continues to value the relationships and lessons football has provided, aiming to make the most of his final season.
