Athlete Spotlight with Weatherford’s Cora Hamons – Presented by More than Medicine

For Weatherford High School senior Cora Hamons, athletic success is not rooted in waiting for motivation to arrive. It comes from the daily decision to work, compete, and improve, whether she is sprinting around the track, training before school, or patrolling right field for the Eagles’ softball team.

Hamons is a three-sport athlete who plays softball and runs both track and cross country. She is Weatherford’s starting right fielder in softball, while her track events include the 4×800-meter relay, 4×400-meter relay, and mile.

Her approach is centered on steady progress and resilience through difficult moments.

“I’m motivated by becoming better than I was yesterday. Early morning practices or days when I feel completely drained are when I want to give up the most, but knowing that every challenge will eventually add up is what keeps me going.”

That commitment has already helped Hamons experience one of the biggest moments of her athletic career: winning a state championship in softball. Still, she continues to carry the underdog mindset that fuels her competitiveness.

“My favorite opponent to beat is whoever I’m expected to lose to. I like to prove people wrong and get the win.”

Hamons draws inspiration from an unlikely source for a high school athlete: Rocky Balboa. To her, the fictional boxer represents the kind of discipline that translates directly to athletics and life.

“Rocky Balboa is a great inspiration for me because he represents discipline and perseverance. His discipline shows that you can’t become better by only working when you’re motivated; you become better by staying committed.”

She has also learned valuable lessons from Coach Sossamon, her weightlifting teacher.

“My weightlifting teacher, Coach Sossamon, has made the biggest impact in my life by showing me how to work hard. He’s taught me that sometimes you have to be uncomfortable and push past your limits to discover what you’re capable of.”

Hamons appreciates the teammates who challenge her, including fellow softball and track athlete Caylyn Schmidt.

“My favorite teammate to practice with is Caylyn Schmidt. Caylyn is one of my best friends in softball and track, and we are so competitive with each other. Caylyn makes me work hard, but always keeps me laughing.”

Away from competition, Hamons balances athletics with National Honor Society, Student Council, and leadership lab. She understands that managing academics and activities takes focus.

“Education is important, and it takes insane discipline and effort to keep up with all my schoolwork while I’m in season.”

As a senior, Hamons views wearing Weatherford colors as more than an individual opportunity. It is a responsibility to the program’s past, present, and future.

“To me, representing Weatherford athletics is a huge privilege, and I like to show how well our coaches train us and how great Weatherford athletes are. When I think about representing Weatherford, I think about all the past athletes who played before me and how I need to pass on, by example, what it means to be a Weatherford Eagle.”
