At the Weatherford vs. Clinton football game, Weatherford Principal Garrett Smith, Assistant Principal Kelly Wilson and teacher Leslie Waldrop were presented a check for Science and Math education for Weatherford High School by the people of Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas. Devon Energy’s Wally Stillwell and Michael Webb were also in attendance for the presentation.
This support will be benefiting Weatherford STEM programs and teachers. Leslie Waldrop is one of the staff members benefiting from the donation.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your hobbies, your passions.
My name is Leslie Waldrop. I’ve been married to my husband, Ryan, for 16 years. We have three kiddos; Olivia, Ryker, Knoxlie. I am a previous career Radiation Therapist turned Science Teacher. I love all things science especially Anatomy. My hobbies include chasing my kids around, keeping my sourdough “Willa” alive, and hunting.
What classes do/did you teach?
My current classes include Honors Biology I and Dual Credit Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Where did you go to college and what led you into teaching?
I completed my bachelor’s degree from SWOSU in 2008 as an Allied Health Sciences major with a minor in Chemistry. I then attended OUHSC and received a degree in Medical Imaging and Radiation Science, Radiation Therapy in 2010. I received my Masters in Health Care Administration from OSU in 2020. My love for science and the need for positive teachers is what led me here. I want kids to fall in love with science, and learn along the way while also having fun!
Who mentored you into the educator you are today?
Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Brinkley, Dr. Wolgamott, Mrs. Ball and several other science teachers impacted my life and helped me fall in love with science. My mother has been a teacher for 48 years and has taught 3 generations. To see someone love teaching and make such an impact has paved the way for me to make a difference.
What do you love about teaching?
What I love about teaching is seeing students have an “AHA” moment while they are learning. To see them truly understand an idea or concept and apply it to their own life is the greatest end goal I could have. I also love to have fun. When students are having fun while learning it’s the best.
What is great about your current school?
Weatherford High School is such a great place to be. We have some of the most caring and talented teachers and staff who seek the very best for our students. The students are also so very talented – in the classrooms, on the fields, and everywhere in between.
The People of Oklahoma Oil and Natural Gas are committed to supporting STEM education. Why is teaching Science and Math so important?
Teaching math and science is very important for our future. No matter what career or continued education path, there is going to be math and science involved. I think it’s important to provide our students with a basic understanding and knowledge to help set them up for success in whatever goals and aspirations they have.
