Weatherford’s Ella Strickler – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by More than Medicine

The Weatherford Lady Eagles are gearing up for an exciting basketball season, and junior forward/center Ella Strickler is ready to make an impact both on and off the court. Known for her energy and leadership, Strickler says her biggest focus this year is being a player her team can count on. “One goal I have is to be a dependable player and teammate this year,” she said. “I want to be a positive player by encouraging my teammates and celebrating their successes.”

Standing at 5’9”, Strickler plays a crucial role in the paint, using her awareness and basketball IQ to help the Lady Eagles find an offensive edge. “I look for any mismatches, or if my teammates are open,” she said. “If my defender is slacking off, I can back cut.” Her preparation starts long before tipoff. “I prepare by watching film on the team we are playing,” she explained. “I make sure I stay hydrated and get extra shots up.”

For Strickler, the mental side of the game is just as important as the physical. “My mindset is to do my job and play to the best of my ability,” she said. “I want to do what I can to help my team win.” That focus and determination have earned her respect among teammates and coaches alike. She’s passionate about not just winning but helping everyone around her improve. “I want to be the player that made my teammates better and always worked hard,” Strickler said. “I want to make an impact on the people around me.”

The team’s chemistry this year, she says, feels stronger than ever. “I think we’ve bonded together more as a team this year,” she shared. “We are so encouraging to each other on and off the court. The gym is a whole different atmosphere this year.” Their guiding principle has been a motto they live by daily: Defend, communicate, compete, and enjoy. “We are always working for our postseason and making it as far as we can,” she said. “The past two years we’ve gone by this for practice and games. We work toward this and take it step by step every game and practice.”

Beyond basketball, Strickler is heavily involved at Weatherford High School, participating in track, FCA, NHS, STUCO, and Special Olympics. Whether she’s leading a fast break or volunteering in her community, she’s committed to representing her school with pride.
