For Weatherford senior Jackson Smith, basketball has been more than just a game — it’s been a journey of teamwork, growth, and big dreams. Entering his final season with the Eagles, Smith has a clear vision for what he hopes to accomplish. “I would like to hit 1,000 points and make All-State,” he said. That’s been a goal of his for a long time.
That focus on achievement is matched by the energy surrounding this year’s squad. “Overall, the morale has been very good so far,” Smith shared. “We all get along.” The camaraderie and chemistry built among teammates have been key to Weatherford’s success and unity. “We’ve learned our roles and learned how to play together,” he added.
And for a team with high expectations, the goal is simple but bold. “We want to make it back to the Big House,” Smith said, referencing the state tournament. The Eagles know what it takes to get there — and Smith’s leadership and composure on the floor will be vital in that pursuit.
Standing 6’3”, Smith runs the two-guard position, a role that suits his awareness and feel for the game. “Reading screens is very important,” he said when asked about his approach on offense. His ability to recognize movement and spacing helps open opportunities for himself and his teammates.
Preparation is also part of his process. “Rest the night before,” Smith said simply. It’s a short but telling glimpse into his mindset — steady, focused, and ready when it’s time to play.
Once he steps onto the court, though, it’s all about joy and leadership. “Have fun,” Smith said. “I just try to be a good leader.” It’s that balance of competitiveness and positivity that has made him such a key figure in Weatherford’s locker room.
When asked what makes this group special, Smith’s answer came without hesitation: “We all really know how to play.” That collective basketball IQ has been a defining trait for the Eagles — one that could very well carry them deep into postseason play.
For Smith, the best memory so far is one every player dreams of. “Winning state,” he said. And as his senior season unfolds, that memory fuels the fire for one more championship run.
As for what comes next, Smith is still figuring that out — but one thing’s certain: his time in a Weatherford uniform will be remembered for his leadership, consistency, and the legacy he leaves behind.
